A Place That Feels Untouched
Just outside the small fishing village of Morar, a little off the road to Mallaig, Loch Morar sits quiet and remote. There are no roads running around most of it - just a narrow path in places, and long stretches where the shoreline is left completely alone.
What is Loch Morar
Loch Morar is the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, reaching depths of over 300 metres.
Surrounded by rugged hills and quiet shoreline, it sits on the west coast of Scotland in the village Morar near Mallaig.
But standing at the edge of it, you would never know.
Without visible depth, it's just dark water that gives nothing away.
Visiting Loch Morar
If you are looking for somewhere quieter than the usual Highland routes, this is one of those places.
Location: Near Morar
Type: Freshwater loch
Access: Roadside viewpoints and walks around the Loch
Surroundings: Hills, forest and open shoreline
Accessibility: The loch is surprisingly easy to reach. A single-track road winds along the northern shore, offering several roadside viewpoints and pull-ins for photography. For those who want to feel the scale of the landscape, short walks lead from the village to the water's edge, through pockets of ancient forest and out onto the open, windswept shoreline.
One of the Most Unique Lochs in Scotland
There are plenty of lochs in Scotland but very few feel like this.
It's not just the depth - It's the stillness, the scale. It feels like something sits beneath it.
If you are travelling through the west of Scotland, this is one of those places that is easy to pass.
It does not demand attention but it definitely rewards it.
The Legend of Morag
Loch Morar has its own monster story. Just like Loch Ness, there have long been reports of something in the water here. They called it Morag.
Sightings go back generations. A shape beneath the surface and something very large moving where nothing should be.
Standing at the edge of the loch, it doesn’t feel impossible.
