Farigaig Forest, Loch Ness: A Hidden Moss Woodland in the Scottish Highlands

When people think of Loch Ness, they usually think of castles, waterfalls and legends of the famous monster said to lurk beneath its waters.
Few realise that hidden among the hills above the loch lies one of the most enchanting woodlands in the Scottish Highlands.
Farigaig Forest is a beautiful area on the eastern shore of Loch Ness, just a short distance from Inverness. While it may not attract the crowds of some of Scotland's better-known destinations, those who take the time to explore it are rewarded with something truly special.
A Forest Covered in Moss

What makes Farigaig Forest stand out is the moss.
Not just the occasional patch growing on a rock or fallen branch, but vast carpets of green that seem to cover everything. Tree roots disappear beneath thick cushions of moss. Fallen trunks slowly become part of the forest floor. Even the boulders appear softened by decades of growth.
In places, enormous moss-covered mounds rise from the woodland floor. Perfectly rounded and unbelievably soft, they resemble giant green cushions scattered beneath the pines.
It is the sort of place that makes you slow down.
A place where you stop looking for grand views and start appreciating the details.
One of My Favourite Forests Near Loch Ness
I've explored countless forests across Scotland, but there is something about Farigaig that keeps drawing me back.
Perhaps it is the silence.
Or perhaps it is simply the joy of discovering another patch of moss with truly exceptional squish.
Whatever the reason, Farigaig feels different.
On misty mornings the forest takes on an almost dreamlike quality. The trees fade into the fog, the woodland floor glows emerald green, and every corner seems to hide another small wonder.
Ancient Woodland and Highland Atmosphere

Farigaig Forest is not famous because it contains dramatic ruins or towering mountains.
Its magic comes from its atmosphere.
This is a place where nature has been quietly shaping the forest floor for centuries. Rain, moss and time have transformed the forest into a living tapestry of greens, golds and browns.
It is easy to understand why places like this inspired so many stories across the Highlands.
Standing among the moss-covered trees, with the scent of nature in the air and the sounds of the modern world far away, it feels as though you have stepped into another age.
Visiting Farigaig Forest
If you are looking for hidden places near Loch Ness, Farigaig Forest is well worth exploring.
Bring sturdy footwear, take your time and resist the urge to rush through it. The real beauty of this woodland is not found at the end of a trail.
It is found beneath your feet, on fallen logs, among the roots of ancient trees and in the giant moss mounds that make this one of the most magical forests in the Scottish Highlands.
And if you happen to find a patch of moss with next-level squish, stop and appreciate it.
Trust me.
You'll understand why.
