Argan oil for beard care is everywhere — but is it really helping beard growth, or holding it back? The Truth About Argan Oil Beard Growth Claims

Argan oil for beard care is a popular choice due to its moisturizing and nourishing properties. Extracted from the kernels of the argan tree native to Morocco, argan oil is rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, making it an ideal ingredient for adding shine and softening facial hair. Many people swear by its ability to promote healthy skin and soften beards, but using argan oil for beard growth isn’t as straightforward as it may seem.

Does Argan Oil Block DHT?

A common question is whether argan oil can block DHT. Argan oil contains linoleic acid, which has been studied for its potential to inhibit 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT (Source). Since DHT is important for beard growth, it’s thought that this could negatively impact facial hair development. However, it's important to note that this study examines the effects in vitro (in laboratory settings) and does not address the impact of topical application of linoleic acid on DHT levels in humans.

A patent discusses linoleic acid for treating androgenetic alopecia (a hair loss condition linked to DHT) by inhibiting 5-alpha reductase. While the patent suggests linoleic acid could help reduce DHT and slow hair loss, it’s important to note that patents are not peer-reviewed studies, so these claims should be treated with caution (Source).

DHT and Beard Growth:

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) plays a crucial role in beard growth, as it stimulates the development of terminal hair follicles, leading to thicker, darker beard hair. DHT also helps extend the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle, which is necessary for robust beard growth. Without adequate DHT levels, the beard may appear sparse, especially in areas like the cheeks or jawline where hair growth is more sensitive to hormonal fluctuations. (Source)

Argan Oil and Beard Growth:

Argan oil for beard growth can be beneficial by improving hydration and enhancing the appearance of existing facial hair, making it softer, shinier, and healthier. However, there may be a consideration for those focused on encouraging new beard growth. Since argan oil contains linoleic acid, which has been suggested in some studies to potentially inhibit 5-alpha reductase, it could theoretically impact DHT levels. Since DHT plays a key role in stimulating beard growth, a reduction in DHT might limit the density or fullness of new hair growth, especially in patchy areas.

That said, it’s important to note that the evidence on the topical effects of linoleic acid in inhibiting DHT is still limited, and further research is needed to confirm its impact on beard growth. If you're focused on maximizing beard density or encouraging growth in specific areas, this is something to consider, but it should be understood as a theoretical concern rather than a proven fact.
