Why We Use Wild Scottish Chaga in Our Beard Products

Hairy Highlander founder exploring an ancient birch forest in th eScottish Highlands looking for chaga

Many beard products begin with ready-made bases, often combining natural and synthetic ingredients designed for cost-effective mass production. We believe beard care deserves better.

It's one of the reasons we started Hairy Highlander. We wanted to create something different, where quality comes before cost and convenience.

Many of the ingredients we choose are less commonly used because they're more expensive to source, while our wild harvesting and slow infusion processes require considerable time, knowledge and care. Chaga is a perfect example of this approach.

We've been using chaga for as long as we can remember, long before Hairy Highlander existed.

Highly prized among foragers and bushcraft enthusiasts, this highly sought-after forest treasure has fascinated us for years. For us, it all began with tea.

For centuries, chaga has been treasured across Siberia, Scandinavia and the far north, traditionally brewed into tea for its perceived health benefits. Rare outside the cold birch forests of northern regions, it's often called the Black Diamond of the Forest, valued for its traditional associations with immune support, digestive health and general wellbeing.

But our interest in chaga eventually went beyond drinking it. We'd long been familiar with stories of Mongolians traditionally using chaga in hair care, which sparked our curiosity about what this remarkable forest ingredient might offer when applied directly to hair and skin.

Chaga Benefits for Hair and Skin: What Does Science Say?

One particularly fascinating discovery was chaga's traditional use in Mongolia, where it was prepared as a hair wash to help maintain healthy hair.

In 2019, Japanese researchers investigated this practice and discovered several naturally occurring compounds in chaga that stimulated the activity and multiplication of human hair follicle cells. These cells play an important role in controlling hair growth, making the findings particularly interesting. In laboratory tests, four of the compounds actually outperformed minoxidil, a well-known hair growth treatment, in stimulating these cells.

The research suggests these compounds could have potential for supporting hair growth, although their effects on actual beard growth have yet to be established.

And it isn't just hair. Research into chaga's effects on skin has also produced interesting findings. Studies using human skin cells have shown antioxidant activity, protection against oxidative stress and effects on collagen production, all relevant to maintaining healthy skin.

For us, this connection between hair follicles and the skin beneath them made chaga a particularly fascinating ingredient to explore in beard care.

Scientific research:

Why We Infuse Chaga Into Oil

Traditionally, chaga is brewed in hot water, extracting primarily hydrophilic compounds. In simple terms, hydrophilic means water-loving.

But chaga also contains lipophilic compounds, meaning fat-loving. These include certain triterpenes highlighted in the hair research, which have a greater affinity for oils and less polar substances.

This distinction fascinated us. Rather than preparing a water extract, we chose to explore traditional oil maceration, infusing chaga directly into specific organic carrier oil's to draw out oil-compatible constituents.

Protecting Quality with Biophotonic Violet Glass

Our commitment to quality extends to our packaging.

We use premium biophotonic violet glass, specifically designed to filter out much of the visible light that can contribute to the degradation of natural oils, botanical extracts and essential oils over time. This helps protect their delicate compounds, natural aromas and overall quality.

Unlike ordinary glass, violet glass selectively filters light while allowing certain violet, UVA and infrared wavelengths to pass through. It's considerably more expensive to source and uncommon in beard care, but after investing so much into our ingredients, we believe protecting them deserves just as much attention.

Wild Chaga From Scotland's Ancient Birch Forests

What we love most, is how this takes us deep within Scotland's ancient birch forests, among silver trunks, moss-covered ground and centuries of Highland history.

Through our partner estates, we have access to over 200,000 acres across the Cairngorms and Scottish Highlands, allowing us to source remarkable wild ingredients from landscapes we've spent a lifetime exploring.

Chaga is surprisingly easy to miss. Its hard, charcoal-black exterior resembles rough bark, almost an extension of the beautiful birch tree itself. But break beneath that rugged surface and you'll discover a striking solid golden-orange interior.

It's actually a slow-growing formation that can take many years to develop, making it particularly special to find.

We carefully select suitable specimens during specific harvesting periods, taking no more than one-third of the growth and only from trees showing no signs of previous harvesting. Chaga is incredibly slow-growing, so we take great care to minimise our impact and leave as much undisturbed as possible.

From the Forest to Our Beard Products

This is where our approach to beard care becomes rather different.

Many beard care products begin with ready-made bases, often combining natural and synthetic ingredients in formulations designed for cost-effective mass production. There's nothing inherently wrong with this approach, but at Hairy Highlander, we prioritise quality above everything else.

Many of the ingredients we choose are less commonly used because they're more expensive to source, while our wild harvesting and slow infusion processes require considerable time, knowledge and care.

These aren't always practical choices for mass production, but for us, they're what make our products special.

We source our own wild chaga and macerate it directly into the oils used in our beard care formulations.

Using carefully controlled temperatures and processing conditions, we slowly prepare our infusion until the oil develops a beautiful, deep, dark colour. Following preparation, it's sent for laboratory testing before being approved for incorporation into selected products within our premium Caledonia collection.

It's an unusually hands-on approach, but one we're incredibly proud of. From understanding where an ingredient grows and how it has been traditionally used, to exploring its chemistry and developing our own extraction process, every stage has a purpose.

For us, craftsmanship begins long before anything reaches the bottle. It's about a lifetime of knowledge of the Highland wilderness, genuine curiosity and a determination to create something different.

It's not simply about what goes into our beard products. It's about the knowledge and purpose behind every ingredient.

Where wilderness knowledge meets beard science.

  • A note on the science: The research referenced concerns chaga compounds studied under laboratory conditions, not our finished products. It does not establish that chaga-infused beard care stimulates hair growth or prevents hair loss. Our products are cosmetic formulations developed for beard grooming and conditioning. The history and emerging science of chaga explain our interest in this remarkable ingredient, rather than representing claims about the finished products.
