A dry beard can feel rough, wiry and almost impossible to keep under control.

If your beard feels more like straw than soft facial hair, there are usually a few simple reasons behind it.

The good news is that you often do not need a complicated routine to improve it.

What Causes a Dry Beard?

Beard hair is naturally coarser than the hair on your head, so it needs proper conditioning.

One of the biggest causes of dryness is simply removing too much of the natural oil from the beard and skin underneath it.

Washing too often, using strong shampoos or cleansers and repeatedly exposing your beard to hot water can all leave it feeling dry and rough.

Synthetic fragrance, cheap or low quality beard products, cold weather, wind and central heating can make the problem worse too.

Are You Overwashing Your Beard?

A clean beard is important, but more washing is not always better.

If your beard feels noticeably rougher straight after a shower, your washing routine is worth looking at.

Ordinary hair shampoos are not always ideal for facial hair, particularly if they leave the beard feeling stripped.

A good beard wash should remove dirt, sweat and buildup without leaving your beard feeling like you have washed every bit of moisture out of it.

How Do You Make a Dry Beard Softer?

Conditioning is the important part.

After washing, beard oil helps replace some of the moisture and conditioning that dry facial hair needs.

But do not just rub it over the outside.

Work the oil through the beard and onto the skin underneath. A dry beard and dry skin often go hand in hand.

For longer, thicker or particularly coarse beards, a beard butter or balm can add another layer of conditioning and help make the hair feel softer and easier to manage.

Does the Quality of Beard Oil Matter?

Very much so.

A beard oil is largely made up of carrier oils, which means the quality and choice of those oils matters far more than the label on the front.

What About Fragrance?

Fragrance is another thing worth considering if your beard or the skin underneath regularly feels dry or uncomfortable.

We use pure essential oils instead, carefully blended into our products to create our scents.

Every one of those decisions costs us more.

We could increase our margins by compromising on the oils, the ingredients, the fragrance or the packaging.

The Simple Dry Beard Routine

If your beard is dry, start with the basics.

Wash it gently and avoid constantly stripping it. After washing, use beard oil on both the hair and skin underneath. If your beard is particularly coarse or long, follow with a conditioning beard butter or balm.

You do not need ten products. You need a few good ones.

If your current routine continually leaves your beard feeling dry, coarse or difficult to manage, changing the quality of the products you use is a good place to start.
